Matthew Stafford: Finger injury isn’t as bad as one in 2011

Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford isn’t too worried about the finger injury he picked up in Week 14, at least relatively speaking.

In an appearance on WJR-AM 760’s “The Mitch Albom Show” on Monday, Stafford said that his ailing digit isn’t quite as bad as in 2011 when he suffered a similar injury.

“I’ve had the broken index before and played with that, and that’s no fun,” Stafford said, per Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press. “But this one will be a little bit different. I don’t think it’s going to be as bad as that one was.”

Stafford hurt the middle finger on his right (throwing) hand in the first quarter of Detroit’s victory over the Chicago Bears on Sunday. You can read the somewhat nasty details here.

Birkett notes that Stafford played three games after hurting the hand in 2011, throwing nine interceptions as Detroit went 1-2 over that span. The former Pro Bowler seems poised to play through the pain again this time around, and the 9-4 Lions will cross their fingers (no pun intended) that he isn’t too badly affected by the injury with a high playoff seed within reach.
