Matthew Stafford has torn ligaments in finger on throwing hand

Matthew Stafford will likely play the rest of the season with a glove on his throwing hand after suffering a dislocation and torn ligaments in his middle finger.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Stafford dislocated the top of his middle finger and suffered torn ligaments, which have left the top of his finger bent at a 90-degree angle.

Stafford injured his finger during the first quarter of the Lions’ win over the Chicago Bears after getting tangled with the Bears’ Leonard Floyd on this play. The Detroit QB went to the sidelines to throw and put on a glove for the rest of the game, but the injury affected his throws.

After getting hurt, Stafford threw his first red zone interception since 2014 and also his first pick-six of the season. But he rallied his team down the field for the winning score late in the game to make Detroit 9-4.

“Just tried to play through it,” Stafford said of the finger injury after the game. “Play as good as I could. I let those guys know that it may not be pretty coming in there, but those guys made some great plays for me. Obviously didn’t play as well as I can.

“You know, those two turnovers hurt us, but our defense played great. Then we were able to put together a drive late to go win it.”

Stafford is determined to play through the injury without missing any time. Detroit has won five in a row and eight of nine. Dan Orlovsky is the team’s backup quarterback.
