Michael Bennett rips Jake Matthews over low block, only has knee bruise

Seattle Seahawks defensive lineman Michael Bennett is fortunate he avoided a major knee injury after he was cut-blocked on Sunday, but that probably won’t make him feel any better about what happened.

On a play where Matt Ryan threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Mohamed Sanu, Atlanta Falcons left tackle Jake Matthews dangerously dove at Bennett’s knee. While the play was technically legal, Bennett felt it was dirty.

“To me it’s a scary, (expletive) move,” he said, per Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times. “Honestly, I think if you dive at someone else’s legs, you’re a little (expletive). If you are big in the NFL, you just line up and play — why you got to cut someone on the (expletive) play? I mean, I don’t know. That (expletive) is just stupid to me. Why cut somebody when you can just line up and win? I don’t know. I don’t come off the ball jumping at offensive linemen’s legs.”

Bennett’s knee bent awkwardly, but Pete Carroll said Monday that the veteran only suffered a bruise. It could have been much worse.

Interestingly enough, Bennett’s brother, New England Patriots tight end Martellus Bennett, was also on the receiving edge of a hit he felt was cheap on Sunday.
