Michael Irvin: Darrelle Revis dealing with confidence issue

Darrelle Revis

Darrelle Revis is going through a shockingly poor season for the New York Jets, and Michael Irvin thinks the cornerback is experiencing confidence issues.

Irvin joined WFAN’s Evan Roberts and Joe Benigno on the radio for an interview Wednesday and talked about Revis’ struggles. The Hall of Fame wide receiver believes Revis foreshadowed potential problems this season when he first started talking in training camp about one day having to switch positions from cornerback to safety.

“That was almost his way of trying to capitulate and get out of the situation because he knew,” Irvin told WFAN, via ESPN New York. “A fine athlete like that, he knows where his game is. He knows what he can and can’t do. When he talked about it, he was telling us early on what was going on, (to) be prepared for it.”

Revis allowed 10 catches for over 100 yards last week against the Browns — numbers he hardly ever would have surrendered when he was going strong as “Revis Island.”

“Right now, what he’s dealing with is a confidence issue,” Irvin told Roberts and Benigno. “We don’t like to think of our great ones as having confidence issues. That’s why I was shocked to see some of the things we saw with Tiger Woods after we’ve seen him master confident for so long. We’re shocked to see it.”

Revis’ play has fallen off a cliff this season. He’s making $17 million this season, and it wouldn’t be a stretch to think the Jets might consider cutting him before next season, especially after Revis acknowledged his body is breaking down.
