Michael Vick confirms he owns a dog

A day after declining to speak about his personal life, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick confirmed that he owns a dog.

“I understand the strong emotions by some people about our family’s decision to care for a pet,” Vick said in a statement released by his publicist, via the Philly Inquirer. “As a father, it is important to make sure my children develop a healthy relationship with animals.

“I want to ensure that my children establish a loving bond and treat all of God’s creatures with kindness and respect. Our pet is well cared for and loved as a member of our family. This is an opportunity to break the cycle. To that end, I will continue to honor my commitment to animal welfare and be an instrument of positive change.”

Speculation that Vick owned a dog mounted last week when a photo the quarterback shared over Twitter showed he kept a box of dog treats in his home.

Vick notably went to prison for funding a dog fighting operation that engaged in the brutal and cruel treatment of several dogs. He indicated during a July interview with Piers Morgan that he was interested in owning a dog again.

Vick admitted in July that he was more dedicated to studying dogs than the Falcons playbook while involved in the illegal operation.

This guy should never even be allowed around dogs much less own one. I used to be a Eagles fan since birth til that brought Vick onboard I tossed my Eagles jersey’s because I was ashamed to be seen in them,. I own a Rescue Dog and to let this lifeform anywhere near a dog is just plain wrong. He should be forgiven he paid his so called debt but he should NEVER be allowed near a Dog again for the rest of his life.

  • moosesmom

So is he gonna train it to fight too? Or maybe he will sell it to someone to help them train their dog to fight….HE HAS NO CONCEPT OF LOVING A PET…HE IS OUT FOR THE FREAKIN MONEY

Relax the man has paid his debt(PRISON)what more do you want, again game dog fighting goes way back fellas, let the man have a dog again…..I’m sure he learned some lessons about (LAW) and (LIFE)….Stay up (MV)…Pitbull…owner too!

  • Dea Shelton

Your whacked!  It is illegal in the US to engage in the practice of fighting dogs.  Besides it is inhumane.  How could you take a loving animal and abuse them to this level.  Anyone that abuses animals is the lowest life form on the planet, beneath ameoba.  Research has shown most psychopaths begin with the abuse of animals and move to humans.

and he’s learned and moved forward… if he owns himself a boxer that’s a good dog for his children and the family… a good rehabilitation dog as well. Vick is moving forward in his life and everyone else needs to as well.

  • http://twitter.com/Cueil Daniel Lawson

That dog is for his girls… it’s a boxer it’s not going to be doing any fighting

  • http://twitter.com/Cueil Daniel Lawson

you think he shouldn’t be allowed to be rehabilitated? You think that this isn’t going to be good for his family to help raise awareness of the issues and a great learning experience… he did a horrible thing and paid the price…

i dont know, i think a  pedophile is worst? he did the time leave him be im sure all the people that hate him have some things in their past that they would be ashamed of? dont people deserve a second chance?

Just wondering, should be hold you accountable for ALL your past mistakes?

He made bad choices, the difference between a bad person and a good person, is they accept the mistakes, they learn from them and they work to teach others.

Everyone deserves the chance to redeem themselves, you, me and even Mr. Vick.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/LTQXRKVHOK2FJGGMW5IKOBOFHA Larry S

Dog’s aren’t “trained” to fight.. they are bred to fight.  So, obviously, no.  Considering the breed and the fact it’s actually allowed around his children.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/LTQXRKVHOK2FJGGMW5IKOBOFHA Larry S

Dog fighting does not take typical dogs and throw them into fights.  They are bred, mainly out of the country and taught to be mean from day one.

This is also different than “abusing” an animal, in the context of FBI Profiling (to which you call research).  That type of abuse is more direct.

The fact is, he did his time, servered his sentence as perscribed by the law.

If you do not agree, then get with a whole bunch of people and petition to increase the mandatory requirements, otherwise, there is nothing further you can do.

I seriously doubt you are perfect, and you probably have asked for understanding and forgivness when you messed up…  he deserves no less.

Now, if he messes up again…  than you are fully right to has for his personal castration… but until then, cut him some slack and try to give him the benefit of doubt.

Who knows, he might end up being the strongest asset to the fight against Animal Cruelty.  At the very least, past events did cast some light on the subject.

  • Hallesy

I think its great he owns a dog and his kids get the enjoyment of having one.  He made a mistake and more than paid his dues.  The ones who are not normal here are the ones that want to punish him even more.  Let the man live his life.  He was not a Hero of mine before but by the way he handled himself since his crime he has become a hero of mine.  He is an outstanding individual!!

  • Ldhjr1

    Karen you need a life

  • USA_GAL

Larry, I’ve made mistakes, but they NEVER included killing, maiming innocent animals!!  He can pay his legal penalty, but you can never redeem the torture and killing of those poor dogs.
I don’t think he “mistakenly” killed and tortured those dogs..
There was no mistake about it.
If he hadn’t been caught, he’d still be doing it…
    He’s a Dog Killer..
    He’s a poor excuse for a man..

  • Melawian

I don’t know where you are getting your information, but you are completely wrong about dogs being “bred” and “trained” to fight. I don’t know if you understand what Michael Vick did and allowed to have happen. He allowed a dog to be thrown in his pool while onlookers cheered and  laughed as slowly drowned.  That type of mentality doesn’t change. It’s not him, but the onlookers and the people he obviously hangs with that are the problem.

  • Melawian

I have know idea where you are getting your information, but are really misguided about how and what dogs are used for dogfighting in the USA.

  • Melawian

Unless the man has completely dumped all of his friends and no longer parties and no longer allows anyone in his home otheer than his daughters to play with the dog, then he should not have one. Just because you pay your dues doesn’t mean that everyone else you know has. What he and his friends did to dogs was more than just fighting.  They made a public spectacle of torture and maiming dogs–enough that the police got involved which would have taken a lot.  What the police found was something akin to a seral killers back yard.  Eyewitnesses accounts of dog being tortured to death and then buried in his backyard.  There was more to it than he was just dog fighting.  That is why I don’t really think he deserves a dog.

  • Debs626

The brutal murder that Vick and his thug friends inflicted on those poor defenseless animals is sick and disgusting. He and his friends deserves to die a horrible and painful death. I just don’t know how they can live with themselves.
I hope this poor pooch doesn’t end up dead hanging from a tree, electrocuted, drown, or beaten to death when Vick gets mad. I don’t believe for one minute that this pos wouldn’t have stopped killing those dogs if he didn’t get caught. He did it for the money. He is evil and like I said desreves a horrible death and so does his loser friends who were a part of this greedy so called sport.

  • joej87

Mr. Vick has done his best to make a terrible crime into something good. He continues to work with animal activists on animal cruelty. Those activists accept his sincerity and are the best judges of that. Not you or I. There is a biblical principle that states the sins of your father are passed down from generation to generation. I believe Mr. Vick sincerely wants to stop the cycle of violence that was passed down to him from his father. His children will be given the opportunity to love a family pet and break the chain of sin. That is a good thing. Not preaching, just saying.

  • mn12

(dog pictured is not Vick’s current pet) This was at the end of the article.

Most of you are saying that Michael Vick “served his time,” but did he really?  He did was jail time and then was let back into the NFL to make millions of more dollars instead of flipping burgers at some fast food joint making minimum wage.  I am a die hard Packer fan; however, I found myself cheering for Vick during his Falcon days.  After the dog fighting incident, I lost all respect for him as a man and a football player.  Jail time may be enough for some of you, but for a dog lover like me, I believe he should have recieved the same cruel and unusual punishment he allowed those dogs to go through.  I would have rather him not have spent a day in jail and been repeatedly beaten and drowned while others watched and laughed.  Maybe he does deserve a “second chance,” but in all reality, would you be okay with a repeated sex offender being allowed to babysit or work at a daycare?  If the dog ends up getting upset at Vick or his kids for any reason and bites or does physical harm, that dog will get put to sleep…killed, not just sentenced to some time in the pound.

Those of who says Vick does not deserve a dog are worst pieces of scum than what you think Vick is. Stop being an animal apologist and be a human being for once. We all make mistakes and he more than paid for it. We all make mistakes, no matter how big or large. No one has more room to judge one person than themselves. before you throw stones, throw them at yourself first. He is beginning a healing process so stop crying he doesn’t deserve a dog.

  • bestmuma

Yes, Vick “paid” his societal dues by going to prison, etc.  Child sex offenders do the same.  The latter have to register as such & NEVER be around children again.  The same should be in force for convicted animal abusers (not strong enough words for what Vick did).  Don’t get me wrong, they are both the most despicable creatures & in my eyes, incapable of rehabilitaion.  But that’s not my call.
I understand he now wants his children to “establish a loving bond and treat all of God’s creatures with kindness and respect.”, but let them learn that from spending time with other relatives’ & friends’ pets.  Or have them accompany him to volunteer at animal shelters.
Making mistackes is part of life.  Learning from them is up to the individual (some never do).  What Vick did WAS NOT a mistake!  And did he really learn from his prison time?!?  The fact that he’s still allowed to make millions, playing a game, when those who care for abused animals make pennies, leads me to believe he has a very skewed view on reatily; right & wrong; good & bad; kindness and respect.

People get over it he did the crime and he did the time. For all the people who says he shouldn’t own a dog, who are you to deny that is children should not have the opportunity to have a dog. I bet you are are some of the same people who probably treat animals better than people. get a life.

  • Santroy5

I guess Jerry Sandusky will be allowed to foster parent next.

  • Izdat_Right

Too bad you feel like this for a person that has clearly paid for his mistakes.  “A poor excuse for a man?  Are you serious? He paid for his crime, he was incarcerated for it.  What do you want?  Just be honest to yourself and think really where this hatred for the man comes from.  Would you like to be in those shoes? Even if you are not the type that would do such crime.  How would you feel if it was you reading articles that read you are a poor excuse for a human being?  How is that different then the crime he has committed and clearly paid for?  I don’t think you would like it one bit would you?  A poor excuse for a man?  Really?
Wow, that goes to show just where you are on the fence.

  • El_Ladrador

What I do not understand is how people can so easily compare the life of a person to that of an animal. In some cases the life of the animal is held in a higher regard. That should not be the case. Of coarse I believe what Michael Vick did was terrible, but I also believe he has matured and has shown remorse. He was not allowed to make millions. He has earned a spot on his team just like you would if you had his same talents.

  • 1nick4

I do not think putting an innocent dog in harms way to “lets see if this guy has been rehabilited” is very smart or fair to any animal he may want to have for his children.  He can continue to speak against any type of animal cruelty as his forevrer “rehabilitation”.  And no he has not paid the price…to bad you feel that he has.

  • Dave & Valerie Coleman

Be real careful about stating a mentality of cruelity doesn’t change … we have too much history in this country alone of many perpetrators AND “onlookers” of more heinous crimes against human beings.

  • 1nick4

I totally agree with this post!  He stopped because he got caught!

  • 1nick4

there is all kinds of cruelty not just dog fighting

  • 1nick4

A hero wow can’t believe any human being could think that. Some crimes are never paid in full!

  • 1nick4

Unless you watch him 24 hrs a day..to make sure he does not do it again. how could you put an animal in that situation?…let his children go to the zoo.

  • Melawian

Please you are just grasping at straws.  We aren’t talking about America’s past.  We are talking about a guy who I personally don’t think deserves to have another dog.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/GN3TWKLXGNNW5IKDIOYJDRAYO4 Pam

Marv….he brutally beat these dogs to death….how does one, that has no respect for animals, teach others to respect animals????…He did the time, because he got caught. Sometimes animals should be treated better then people, they have bigger hearts then some people do…they trust and love no matter how bad you are to them….that’s why it’s way too scary thinking of someone like Vick,  getting his hands on another dog…..no different then a sicko getting his hands on another child.
as for his kids, well, let him look them in the eyes, and tell them why they can’t have a dog….maybe THAT would be a bit of a *sobering* moment for Vick

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/GN3TWKLXGNNW5IKDIOYJDRAYO4 Pam

Nope! will never get over it Marv. just like I will never get over someone that can beat on a child…or another person. it takes a very cold inside to do these things….and a little of that coldness belongs to people that this doesn’t seem to bother
and thank you much…I have a wonderful life…

my thoughts exactly!….anyone who compares him to a hero, should be totally ashamed of themselves.

and that is why, people like myself, just can’t turn the other cheek, so to say….

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/GN3TWKLXGNNW5IKDIOYJDRAYO4 Pam

we all have our opinions….mine is that YOU sound like scum.
Yes, we do make mistakes, usually NOT killing, beating, maiming for life kind of mistakes….usually a conscience gets in the way of that FIRST!!!!!!!!!
