Michael Vick to give up No. 7 with Jets?

Michael VickMichael Vick has worn No. 7 throughout his entire NFL career, but it sounds like his run with the lucky number is about to come to an end. Vick signed with the New York Jets last Friday, and they already have a No. 7. His name is Geno Smith.

Before Vick signed with the Jets, a report indicated that he would likely make a fuss about being able to wear No. 7 because his brand is built around the number. Vick does have a clothing line called V7, after all. However, TMZ is now reporting that the 33-year-old veteran has no intention of trying to pry the number away from Smith.

“I want to pick a new number for the Jets,” Vick reportedly said. “Number 7 is Geno’s number.”

TMZ’s sources added that Vick is trying to prove he is a capable leader by giving up the number and does not want to create unnecessary drama with his new team. He said he hasn’t decided what number he will wear but is open to suggestions.

If Geno is dead-set against giving up No. 7, I can understand why Vick would just let it go. However, getting a teammate to give up their jersey doesn’t always lead to drama. We have seen guys successfully trade a big chunk of cash or a year’s supply of diapers for a number, so it might be worth Vick’s time to negotiate.
