Report: Mike McCarthy ‘fed up’ with Packers’ inactivity in free agency

mike-mccarthy

Packers head coach Mike McCarthy is reportedly quite unhappy with his general manager.

According to Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, McCarthy is “fed up” with general manager Ted Thompson’s unwillingness to dive into free agency and pick up veteran players to make the roster deeper.

There are a few exceptions – see Julius Peppers and Desmond Howard – but the Packers generally don’t pursue high-priced free agents, preferring to build through the draft. As McGinn notes, they don’t even take chances on minimum salary players after the season has started. McGinn even calls Thompson “a glorified director of college scouting.”

McCarthy has every right to be mad. The roster seemed stagnant this season, especially on offense, though there were a lot of issues at play there. The Packers tinkered with the offense and it went so badly that McCarthy reclaimed playcall duties before the season even ended. Sure, the team made the playoffs, but with a quarterback as good as Aaron Rodgers, shouldn’t they have higher standards than that?
