Report: Nick Foles to start season opener for Eagles

Nick Foles

Carson Wentz’s efforts to be ready to go for Week 1 of the NFL season have fallen short.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Philadelphia Eagles will start Nick Foles at quarterback during the season opener against the Atlanta Falcons, with the decision being made with Wentz’s long-term health in mind.

Wentz, who is recovering from a traumatic knee injury, had said all along his goal was to play the opener. It simply didn’t turn out to be realistic. The Eagles saw no need to rush Wentz back into action and heighten the risk of re-injury when he’s expected to be their quarterback for the next decade-plus, especially when the team can simply call in the Super Bowl MVP to hold down the fort.

Attention will quickly turn to Wentz’s status for Week 2, but one reporter believes even that may be a touch too soon for the young quarterback.
