Patrick Mahomes to start in Week 17 vs. Broncos

Patrick Mahomes

The Kansas City Chiefs have already clinched the AFC West division title, so head coach Andy Reid has decided to give his rookie first-round pick a chance to start his first NFL game.

On Wednesday, Reid announced that Patrick Mahomes will start against the Denver Broncos on Sunday. Alex Smith will serve as the backup for the game.

The Chiefs traded up to No. 10 in this year’s NFL Draft to select Mahomes, so they obviously believe he can be their quarterback of the future. When Kansas City had lost six of seven games earlier in the year and Smith was playing poorly, we heard plenty of cries that Mahomes should be given a chance to take over the starting QB job. Reid continued to stick with Smith despite rumblings that players were giving up on the veteran.

Smith is back to playing well, and the Chiefs have won their last three games to secure their position in the playoffs. He’s not in any danger of losing his job for the postseason, but fans will certainly be watching Sunday’s game closely to see how Mahomes looks.
