Patriots reportedly tried to trade for DeAndre Hopkins at deadline

DeAndre Hopkins

The New England Patriots almost swung another power move during last fall’s trade deadline.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports on Sunday that the Pats attempted to trade linebacker Jamie Collins to the Houston Texans in exchange for Pro Bowl wideout DeAndre Hopkins but were turned down. Instead, they wound up trading Collins to the Cleveland Browns for a conditional third-round pick.

The 24-year-old Hopkins, who recorded 78 receptions for 954 yards and four touchdowns in a relatively down 2016 campaign due largely to the struggles of quarterback Brock Osweiler, can become a free agent after next season. New England’s interest is thus worth noting, especially since the two sides were once again linked in trade rumors recently.
