Pete Carroll not sure if Marshawn Lynch will play vs. Panthers

Marshawn Lynch Seahawks

Marshawn Lynch did not make the trip to Minnesota for the Seattle Seahawks’ playoff game against the Vikings on Sunday, and the team isn’t sure if he’ll be able to play next weekend against Carolina.

Lynch, who is recovering from a late-November abdominal surgery, practiced all week for the Seahawks. Seattle head coach Pete Carroll said during the week he expected Lynch to start in the game. But despite practicing on Friday, Lynch decided he could not play in Sunday’s game and did not travel with his team.

Following the Seahawks’ 10-9 win over the Vikings, Carroll was asked about Lynch’s status for the divisional round playoff game against the Panthers.

Carroll also explained how Lynch went from practicing with the team Friday to deciding it wasn’t even worth making the trip to Minnesota.

It sure sounds like Carroll is trying to cover for Lynch and not make him look too bad to the media. That’s understandable, as he certainly would want to have Lynch available against the Panthers.

Perhaps Lynch made the right call knowing that if he could wait one more week, he would have a much greater chance of being closer to full strength and therefore able to help the team a lot more in the playoffs than if he returned too early, incurred more wear and tear, and then was only at partial strength for the postseason. Remember that former Seahawk Michael Robinson said Lynch was not explosive during the week leading up to the game.
