Pete Carroll: That was not supposed to be an onside kick

Steven Hauschka onside kick

Pete Carroll was criticized on Sunday for attempting what appeared to be an onside kick to start overtime against the St. Louis Rams. After the game, Carroll said despite appearances, that was not an onside kick.

Carroll told reporters that kicker Steven Hauschka misfired on the kick.

“It was supposed to be kicked way down the field,” Carroll said after the game via The Seattle Times’ Danny O’Neil.

That is actually a plausible explanation. Recall that Hauschka’s kick did not hit the ground and actually went straight up into the air, just not very far.

It sounds like the kick was supposed to be a pooch kick.

That might take Carroll off the hook for what many thought was a terrible call. Now let’s hear what the critics have to say about Carroll giving the ball to Marshawn Lynch on 4th and 1 and losing the game 34-31 because Beast Mode could not convert.
