Peyton Manning benched for Brock Osweiler

Peyton Manning

Peyton Manning set an NFL record on Sunday for most career passing yards, and then he was benched.

Manning was benched in favor of backup quarterback Brock Osweiler roughly halfway through the third quarter. He completed just 5-of-20 passes for 35 yards and four interceptions. The Broncos were trailing the Chiefs 22-0 at the time Manning was yanked.

Manning has thrown 13 interceptions this season, which is the most in the NFL. He was limited in practice this week with a rib injury, and it’s unclear if that affected his performance on Sunday.

Broncos coach Gary Kubiak will almost certainly blame Manning’s injury for the benching, and it would be much easier to believe that was the problem if he hasn’t struggled all season long. While Manning is still capable of having good games because he is such a smart quarterback, he simply doesn’t have the physical tools he used to.

Remember all the memes we saw making fun of Manning last season when it looked like he was unable to throw the ball downfield? It could get even worse for the future Hall of Famer this time around.
