Report: Rams will lean towards hiring offensive coach

Jared Goff

The Los Angeles Rams will soon begin a search for a new head coach, and they reportedly are leaning towards bringing in an offensive guy.

Pro Football Talk reported Thursday that the Rams’ head coaching search will begin on Friday. Though they will not limit themselves strictly to offensive coaches, PFT says the Rams will lean in that direction.

From Mike Florio’s report:

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the Rams will embark on a “wide-ranging” coaching search on Friday. The team will lean toward a coach with an offensive background, but the Rams haven’t ruled out the possibility of hiring a defensive coach.

Florio says Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan and Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels are likely to be among the candidates for the job, which is something that previously was speculated.

The Rams fired Jeff Fisher on Monday towards the end of his fifth season as the team’s head coach. They made John Fassel the team’s interim head coach.

Anybody who accepts the head coaching position will do so knowing the team is heavily invested in Jared Goff as the quarterback of the future. The team traded a first in 2017, two seconds and two third-round picks — in addition to swapping first round picks in 2016 — to Tennessee so they could draft Goff. With the Rams’ offense last in the league in points and yards this season, it makes sense to go with an offensive coach who will at least make the team more interesting for the new Los Angeles fan base, which has quickly turned on the team.
