Ravens ‘understand and respect’ Jamal Lewis’ decision to sell gifted Super Bowl ring

Jamal-Lewis

While Jamal Lewis was not on the Ravens team that won Super Bowl Super Bowl XLVII, he was presented a ring by owner Steve Bisciotti as a member of the franchise’s Ring of Honor. Lewis’ ring was recently sold at an auction for over $50,000.

Lewis did not choose sell the gifted ring because of any ill will towards the Ravens, but because of recent financial difficulties. On Monday, the Ravens released a statement saying that due to his situation, they understand his decision.

“Jamal Lewis informed us that he was forced to sell the Super Bowl XLVII ring due to financial difficulties. We understand and respect his decision.”

Too often we her stories of former athletes forced to sell items from their personal collections in order to satisfy debts and financial obligations. Last year, Olympic wrestling legend Rulon Gardner sold some of his memorabilia to help pay off $3.9 million tax debt. Unfortunately, Lewis won’t be the last to part with possessions.

Lewis spent the first six seasons of his career with the Ravens and was a member of the team that was victorious over the New York Giants in Super Bowl XXXV. He was inducted into the Ravens Ring of Honor in 2012.
