Referees cost Patriots defensive touchdown with blown whistle

Broncos backwards pass

The referees during Sunday’s AFC Championship Game between the Patriots and Broncos cost the Pats a defensive touchdown late in the first quarter by blowing the whistle on a pass.

Peyton Manning threw a pass intended for Ronnie Hillman, but the pass went backwards, making it a lateral. The Pats picked up the ball and returned it for a score, but the refs had blown the whistle, making it a dead ball.

Luckily the game wasn’t affected too much as the Patriots scored two plays later on a 1-yard touchdown run by Steven Jackson. But Stephen Gostkowski missed the extra point, putting New England down a point 7-6.
