Report: Carson Wentz expected to miss several games

Carson Wentz

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz will not play in Thursday night’s season opener against the Atlanta Falcons, and that will reportedly not be the only game he misses.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, Wentz is expected to miss several weeks as the Eagles continue to be “overly cautious” with him.

Rapoport notes that the Eagles likely knew there was a good chance Wentz would miss a good portion of the start of the 2018 season, which helps explain why they were so hesitant to trade Nick Foles.

Wentz’s rehab from ACL surgery is said to have gone well, and Philly head coach Doug Pederson gave an encouraging update on his status recently. However, Foles proved last year that he is more than capable of keeping the Eagles in the hunt and then some. Wentz hadn’t been cleared for contact as of earlier this week, and there’s no reason to risk anything this early in the year when you have such a reliable backup option.
