Report: Cowboys expect Tony Romo back in Week 8

Tony Romo back injury

The Dallas Cowboys expect to only be without Tony Romo for six games.

Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com reported Sunday that Romo is progressing nicely in his recovery from a broken vertebrae, and the Cowboys believe he will return after the team’s Week 7 bye. While Romo has had back injuries throughout his career, this injury is said to be unrelated to any of the others.

La Canfora also said the Cowboys “remain fully committed” to Romo as their starter when he returns, despite rumblings that rookie Dak Prescott could play his way into a permanent starting role.

Romo was expected to miss 6-10 weeks when he suffered the injury on Aug. 25. If he comes back for the Cowboys’ Week 8 game against the Philadelphia Eagles, the 36-year-old will have been out about nine weeks.

The Cowboys chose not to free up a roster spot by placing Romo on short-term IR, and Jerry Jones had a legendary quote about the decision. If the team wasn’t optimistic about Romo’s recovery, he wouldn’t be on the active roster.
