Report: Rex Ryan may return to Jets as head coach

Rex Ryan JetsIt looks like the New York Jets brass may actually have their heads out of their behinds and will actually keep Rex Ryan next year.

Ryan will be in the final year of his contract next season, and ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that it seems like he will be back as Jets coach. Schefter says Ryan has always had the support of team owner Woody Johnson, but it was uncertain how he would get along with new GM Jeff Idzik. Schefter says the two have gotten along better than anticipated.

Though it’s not a guarantee that Rex will be back, it seems like he will be. What’s not known is whether he’ll receive a contract extension, and what will happen with many of his assistants, who are working on the final years of their deals.

As I said last week when one report said Rex told his players he heard he would not be back next year, I think he should be back. Rex is an excellent defensive coach and good overall coach. The guy just needs a better quarterback to have a shot at winning consistently. And it seems like Rex telling his players last week he would not be back was more of a motivational tool than reflection of reality.
