Rex Ryan hops on Sammy Watkins conference call

Rex-Ryan-laughing

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan and Buffalo Bills wide receiver Sammy Watkins will be trying to find ways to beat each other this weekend, but the two are already somewhat familiar with one another. Ryan’s son Seth is a walk-on receiver at Clemson, where Watkins played his college ball. So naturally, Ryan had to play a prank on Watkins in advance of Sunday’s game.

Watkins hopped on a conference call with New York reporters on Wednesday, and the last question he was asked came from a familiar voice. Skip ahead to the 5:03 mark of this audio clip that NJ.com’s Dom Cosentino shared for a classic example of Rex being Rex.

“Sammy, I’ve got a question,” Ryan said, posing as a reporter. “How did you help Seth Ryan out? How’d he do out there? And if you could really help him, you wouldn’t play this game. This sounds like Rex Ryan, I know it does, but this is a reporter…”

Watkins didn’t seem fooled, nor was he really amused. The reporters who were sitting in the room with Ryan sure did get a charge out of it, though.

These are the reasons Rex Ryan is still a head coach. If he didn’t have a personality and didn’t bring all kinds of attention to the Jets, he would have been fired a long time ago. With the Jets currently 1-6, this could be the season the charm runs its course.
