Richard Sherman trade rumors are ‘real,’ says Seahawks GM

Richard Sherman

The Seattle Seahawks have received trade inquiries about All-Pro cornerback Richard Sherman this offseason, and it has become clear that the team is keeping the possibility open.

In an interview with ESPN 710 in Seattle’s “Brock and Salk” show that aired Wednesday morning, Seahawks general manager John Schneider was surprisingly honest about the Sherman trade talk.

“What you’ve seen lately in the news is real,” Schneider said. “That’s on both sides. It’s just open communication.”

Receiving calls about a player is one thing, but Schneider all but admitted that Seattle has shopped Sherman around.

“I don’t know if anything would ever happen, but like I tell people all the time, 98 percent of the deals that we’re involved with, we don’t follow through with,” he said. “But at least we’ve opened that door, gone down the road and seen what’s behind Door A or Door B.”

Sherman essentially laughed the reports off at one point. However, Schneider said the Seahawks make it a point to not get into a situation where the media is saying one thing and the team is telling its players another.

“This isn’t a secret like this just came out of nowhere. People find things out and we’re not going to lie to each other and we’re not going to BS each other,” he said. “It’s going to be all laid out, and like I said, that doesn’t happen everywhere. We have open lines of communication between our coaching staff and our player personnel staff. It goes through player development, it goes through our sports science group. There’s a lot going on there.”

Then there’s this report from Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald:

Perhaps Sherman is far closer to being dealt than anyone believed. Seahawks coach Pete Carroll recently shared similar thoughts on the topic (read them here) to those of Schneider, so the possibility of a trade obviously exists. Things could get more interesting later in the month.
