Report: Robert Griffin III not yet cleared for contact, won’t practice this week

Robert Griffin

Cleveland Browns quarterback Robert Griffin III received good news from doctors this week regarding his injured shoulder, but he is not yet ready to return to practice.

ESPN’s Josina Anderson reported on Wednesday that Griffin has been cleared by doctors to resume practicing. However, RG3 has only been cleared for non-contact activity, and a Browns spokesman told Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com that the 26-year-old will not be practicing ahead of the team’s Week 11 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Griffin remains on injured reserve, and he must be “designated for return” on the first day he practices. At that point, the Browns will have 21 days to decide if he will be placed on the active roster or be shut down for the year.

The Browns are still searching for their first win of the season, but they have no reason to rush Griffin back. RG3 signed a two-year contract with the team this past offseason, and head coach Hue Jackson may be planning on giving him another shot in 2017. Risking a setback so Griffin can get back to playing for a 0-10 team makes little sense.
