Browns exec says Robert Griffin III is ‘on pace’ to play again this season

Robert Griffin

Robert Griffin III never got a chance to prove himself in Cleveland, and some have wondered if he will ever play for the Browns again after he suffered a shoulder injury in Week 1. But does Griffin have a chance to play again this season?

Griffin said Monday that he is hoping to return from his fractured left shoulder sooner rather than later. Browns head of football operations Sashi Brown later said RG3 is “on pace” to return before the end of the 2016 season.

“First we’ve got to get him healthy,” Brown said, per Marla Ridenour of the Akron Beacon Journal. “He’s in the process of going back to the docs. He looks like he’s on pace to be able to come back later this year.”

Brown added that the team is “happy” to get a look at rookie quarterback Cody Kessler in the meantime, but one thing is for certain — no Browns quarterback has played well enough to think Griffin would not be the starter if he came back.

RG3 was seen throwing before last Thursday’s game (a session that was investigated by the NFL) against the Baltimore Ravens, and he is eligible to come off injured reserve any time. Once he does come back, he can practice for three weeks before the Browns need to decide if he’ll be activated or remain on IR for the rest of the year.

While all we have really been able to see from Griffin in Cleveland is him smooching his new girlfriend in public, the 26-year-old is signed through next season. If Hue Jackson had enough confidence in him back in the summer, one game with the Browns shouldn’t change things much. Don’t be surprised if Griffin gets another shot.
