Robert Griffin III ‘wouldn’t be bummed’ if Redskins don’t pick up 2016 option

Jay Gruden Robert Griffin III

The Washington Redskins are one of several teams who have been linked to former Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota this offseason, which says a lot about where Robert Griffin III currently stands. Whether the Redskins draft a quarterback or not, it’s fair to wonder if 2015 will be Griffin’s last season with the team.

The Redskins have until May 3 to decide if they want to exercise RG3’s option for the 2016 season, which is worth around $16 million. In a lengthy conversation with Jeff Darlington of NFL Media, Griffin said he will not be upset if he has to play for a new contract in 2015.

“I wouldn’t be bummed,” he said. “Either way, we’re going out there to prove it this upcoming year — not next year. I just want to win. I want to win games and have fun doing it. The rest will take care of itself. They can pick up the option — or they can decide not to pick up the option. It’ll work out either way. I’m focused on this year.”

Darlington specified that Griffin’s mentality is more that he is “betting on himself,” so he is not concerned over his contract. RG3 also said new Redskins general manager Scot McCloughlan told him, “I’m going to put the 10 best players around you to maximize your potential.”

As long as McCloughlan has Jay Gruden on board with that plan, RG3 will be all set. If not, the rumors about Washington’s draft plans could come to fruition.
