Ron Rivera will not call Corey Brown by his real name

Corey Brown’s first season in the NFL was in 2014, but it was his name that garnered more attention than his 21 receptions for 296 yards and two touchdowns.

Brown, whose middle name is Phillip and is from Pennsylvania, went by Philly Brown. He adopted the name while in college because the Buckeyes already had a Corey Brown on the roster. It stuck with him through his collegiate days and into the NFL. His Twitter handle is even @phillybrown10.

With his second season as a member of the Panthers set to get underway, Brown says “Philly” has run its course and he’s ready to be called Corey. The problem is, head coach Ron Rivera isn’t quite ready to let it go just yet.

That settles that. He can be Corey Brown away from the football field. However, once he puts on the shoulder pads, cleats, and helmet, he’s Philly Brown.

On Monday, Rivera announced Brown would be joining Ted Ginn Jr. as the starting wide receiver duo for Cam Newton in the season’s opening game against the Jaguars. Shortly after, Brown was once again embracing Philly on his Twitter account.
