Ryan Clark: Jay Cutler never had a conversation with one of his offensive teammates

Smokin Jay Cutler

Jay Cutler comes across as abrasive and aloof to the public, but surely he is a different person when interacting with his teammates, right? Maybe not.

Former Steelers safety Ryan Clark was talking about Cutler during Thursday’s edition of “NFL Live” on ESPN. The former Pro Bowl DB related a story told to him by one of his ex-Steelers teammates who had played with Cutler on the Bears. Clark said he was curious about what Cutler was like, so he asked his new teammate, figuring that player surely had some insight regarding the enigmatic quarterback’s character. The answer was disappointing yet insightful.

“He said ‘I really can’t tell you, Ryan, because we never had a conversation.'”

Can you imagine that? Clark said he was befuddled at the response considering the player was an offensive guy and therefore worked closer with Cutler than someone who plays defense or special teams. Even if the player was just brought in for a short amount of time, you figure he would have talked with the starting quarterback at least once. Heck, even Clark found time to talk with this guy and they didn’t even play on the same side of the ball.

The story was told in the context of the comments Brandon Marshall made Thursday, who said he was the only one with the “huevos” to hold Cutler accountable. Guess that might be a fair comment considering a former Chicago coach settled for ripping Jay anonymously to the media instead. We already knew from this sad story that Cutler was not popular with fans, but now we know that he isn’t exactly Mr. Charming among his teammates, either.
