Report: Jets have offered Ryan Fitzpatrick three-year deal

The New York Jets and Ryan Fitzpatrick are in a stalemate regarding the quarterback’s contract situation, but the team’s offer to him may not be quite as bad as it originally seemed.

The New York Post’s Mark Cannizzaro says the Jets’ original offer to Fitzpatrick was a three-year deal, which includes $12 million in the first year. That deal supposedly has been on the table for four months.

Fitzpatrick’s camp reportedly has made comments indicating he feels insulted by the offer and that he would rather not play than take it.

If the Jets are advertising the offer as one that includes $12 million in the first year — and I’m assuming they’re the ones who leaked the report to the Post — then it makes you wonder what kind of money they’re offering on the back end. $12 million isn’t exactly the kind of money that screams out at you ‘Holy crap!’ for a football player. Think about it: Brock Osweiler got $18 million per season. Fitzpatrick was better and is being offered a third less. They’re probably offering less in the following two seasons.

I would continue to hold out if I’m Fitzpatrick. The Jets don’t want to roll with the insane clown posse of Geno Smith, Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg this season. They need to sign him and step up their offer.
