Ryan Fitzpatrick reportedly playing for his job against Steelers

Ryan Fitzpatrick Jets

New York Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick has thrown nine interceptions over the past two games, and another multi-turnover performance on Sunday could cost him his job.

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports that Fitzpatrick is “in many ways playing for his job” against the Pittsburgh Steelers. While Fitzpatrick has received nothing but public support from his teammates, Todd Bowles and the coaching staff are reportedly frustrated with the way the veteran has played after he missed most of the offseason over a contract standoff.

Taking it a step further, the Jets believe they could be 3-1 rather than 1-3 at the moment if not for Fitzpatrick’s poor play.

La Canfora also notes that Geno Smith has continued to gain a better understanding of offensive coordinator Chan Gailey’s system. Jets fans have been extremely hard on Smith in the past, but the team could be forced to make a change if Fitzpatrick doesn’t stop turning the ball over.

Brandon Marshall made his feelings about Fitzpatrick clear when he made these comments after Week 4, but can you really defend nine interceptions in two games? That’s the type of terrible play that would cost almost any quarterback his job.
