Ryan Tannehill threw without pain, could return after bye

Ryan Tannehill

The Miami Dolphins are still very much alive in the AFC East after the New England Patriots lost over the weekend, but they need to get better play from the quarterback position if they want to have a shot at making the playoffs. Fortunately, Ryan Tannehill may be getting close to returning from a shoulder injury.

Dolphins head coach Adam Gase told reporters this week that Tannehill did not experience any pain while making throws on Sunday after taking a week off from throwing. Gase cautioned, however, that Tannehill still has a ways to go.

“That was the start of their throwing progression after so many off,” Gase said, per Barry Jackson of The Miami Herald. “It seemed like it went well. It’s not like he’s out there throwing 60-yard throws. They have a progression of how they want to do it. They said it was a good first step and he felt good. So that’s a positive.”

Miami has a bye this weekend before traveling to Indianapolis to face the Colts in Week 12. They have been targeting that game for Tannehill’s return, but Gase recently said everything with the quarterback’s recovery has been inconsistent. Tannehill will need more than just one day of throwing without pain to be ready to start again.

Brock Osweiler has started the last five games for the Dolphins, and the team is 2-3 during that span. The veteran has thrown no touchdowns and two interceptions over the past three games.
