Sam Bradford signs two-year extension with Eagles

Sam Bradford

The Philadelphia Eagles have signed quarterback Sam Bradford to a two-year contract extension, according to a report.

Rather than using the franchise tag on Bradford and paying him nearly $20 million for the 2016 season, the Eagles re-signed him to a deal that Zach Berman and Les Bowen of Philly.com say is worth $36 million and includes $26 million guaranteed. Playoff incentives could reportedly push the total to $40 million.

“The player wanted to be in Philadelphia,” a source told Philly.com.

Word of Bradford’s contract came shortly after Tuesday’s deadline to use the franchise tag or transition tag on players.

With Chip Kelly having brought Bradford to Philly, there was some question over whether new head coach Doug Pederson would want to go in a different direction. However, the Eagles maintained all along that they wanted to bring Bradford back. With a thin quarterback draft class and thinner free agent group, the team had very few options.

One report indicated that the Eagles could look into bringing back their former starting quarterback, but that never came to fruition.
