Sam Darnold appears to have locked up Jets’ starting quarterback job

Sam Darnold

The odds were already in favor of Sam Darnold starting at quarterback for the New York Jets in Week 1, and what he did in the team’s third preseason game seems to have cemented that.

Darnold went 8-of-16 for 89 yards and a touchdown pass in the first half of the Jets’ preseason game against the Giants on Friday. He also rushed twice for 13 yards and led the Jets on two touchdown drives.

Simply being the starter for the team’s third preseason game — often regarded as the dress rehearsal — meant the No. 3 overall pick was in the lead for the job. Playing well should give the coaching staff no reason to feel they need to make a change.

Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater are the team’s other quarterbacks. Bridgewater is receiving interest on the trade market.
