Seahawks tweeted photo of Russell Wilson crying for Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Seahawks-MLK-tweet

Someone who works in the Seattle Seahawks’ social media department made an unwise decision on Monday, and it did not go unnoticed.

With Monday being Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Seahawks sent a Tweet that said “we shall overcome” and included an inspirational quote from Dr. King. That would have been fine, but the team chose to run the quote next to a photo of Russell Wilson crying.

“Seahawks posted (then deleted) this MLK Day tweet,” Bart Hubbuch of The New York Post tweeted along with the screenshot you see above. “Equating the civil rights struggle with a football game? Good god.”

The photo of Wilson was taken after Sunday’s incredible comeback win over the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship Game. Wilson was so overcome with emotion that he broke down crying during his postgame interview on FOX.

Was that a huge moment for Wilson? For sure. Should it ever be compared to the civil rights movement. Ah, no. The Seahawks may have shocked the world, but it’s just football.
