Steelers promote QB coach Randy Fichtner to offensive coordinator

Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers have decided to part ways with offensive coordinator Todd Haley, and they are promoting someone on their current staff to replace him.

On Thursday, the Steelers announced that former quarterbacks coach Randy Fichtner has been named the team’s new offensive coordinator.

“I want to thank Coach (Mike) Tomlin and Art Rooney II for giving me this opportunity to be the offensive coordinator for this organization,” Fichtner said in a statement. “We have a tremendous roster, and it will be my charge to continue putting our offensive players in position to succeed and score points. We have the nucleus to be successful, and I am thrilled about the chance to lead the offense as we have already started preparing for the 2018 season.”

Reports indicated Fichtner took on a bigger role this year when Ben Roethlisberger needed him to serve as a buffer between the quarterback and Todd Haley, as Haley and Big Ben’s relationship seemingly deteriorated as the season wore on. Roethlisberger said this week that he wanted as little change to the coaching staff as possible, and promoting Fichtner allows for that while still getting rid of Haley.

Fichtner has been with the Steelers as an offensive assistant since 2007, first working as the wide receivers coach before becoming the QB coach in 2010.
