Terrelle Pryor thought he would be a Patriot in 2015

Next Sunday’s Week 5 matchup between the Cleveland Browns and the New England Patriots will come with some rich underlying subtext.

In an interview with Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Browns wide receiver Terrelle Pryor, who worked out for New England as a free agent in September 2015, revealed that he was expecting to become a Patriot.

“I really thought I was going to be a Patriot,” Pryor said. “I know Bill Belichick really liked me. I had a great workout for them and everything went really well. I really thought he was going to sign me.”

Pryor added that Belichick ultimately chose not to sign him “because he just wasn’t sure my hamstring was 100 percent healed.”

The ex-Ohio State star wound up signing a deal to return to the Browns, recording 15 catches for 286 yards in six appearances over two seasons since then. Though with the cameos he’s been making under center, perhaps Pryor would have been a better backup QB for the Pats than Julian Edelman.
