Broncos’ T.J. Ward starts laughing while trying to talk up Mark Sanchez

TJ Ward

John Elway, you might want to look a little bit more for a Denver Broncos starting quarterback.

Safety T.J. Ward appared on NFL Network’s NFL Now on Tuesday, and he didn’t exactly sound totally sold on Mark Sanchez.

Ward was asked by host Maurice Jones-Drew about the impact of losing quarterback Brock Osweiler to free agency, and Ward tried and failed to talk up Mark Sanchez.

“Whenever you don’t have a quarterback, it’s going to impact a team,” Ward said, via Nicki Jhabvala of the Denver Post. “But defensively, we have one mindset: No one scores. So (if) we continue to do that, continue to prepare and dominate on the defensive side, then we’ll be all right. But we got to find someone back there. Right now I think we have Mark Sanchez signed and, um, he … he has some experience in this league… (laughs).”

In fairness, it sounds like MJD began laughing first. That Ward joined him so quickly is probably not a great sign, not to mention that he didn’t sound quite sure what positive things he could say about the veteran quarterback.

That said, Ward made clear that he trusts Elway to get it right.

“Whatever Mr. Elway does upstairs, we have complete faith in what he’s done,” Ward said. “Just looking forward to getting the next season going.”

In fairness, Elway seems to know that Sanchez isn’t the answer and continues to assess his options. However, they’re reportedly unwilling to meet San Francisco’s asking price for Colin Kaepernick, nor the financial demands of free agent Ryan Fitzpatrick.
