Report: Tom Coughlin, Jaguars have mutual interest

Tom Couglin

The Jacksonville Jaguars are widely expected to fire head coach Gus Bradley before the start of the 2017 season, and they could be looking to bring back an old face to replace him.

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports that the Jaguars are expected to reach out to Tom Coughlin, who is interested in the job. Team owner Shahid Khan is looking to make changes within the organization, and some who know Coughlin believe he could establish a great relationship with Khan.

Coughlin is certainly no stranger to Jacksonville. He still owns a home there from when he was the first head coach in franchise history, compiling a record of 68-60 with the team over eight seasons and making an appearance in the AFC Championship Game in 1999. This is not the first time we have heard a report about a possible reunion, either.

While Coughlin’s track record speaks for itself and there is a belief he could help develop Blake Bortles and some of Jacksonville’s other young talent, he’ll turn 70 before the start of next season. Hiring him would obviously be a short-term solution.

Based on the comments he made last month, it seems safe to assume that Coughlin is going to explore coaching opportunities this offseason. A return to Jacksonville may be his best bet.
