Tom Coughlin met with Bills ‘several months ago’ over consultant role

Tom Couglin

Tom Coughlin did indeed meet with the Buffalo Bills, according to his agent, but not with regards to the head coaching job.

According to agent Sandy Montag, Coughlin met with the Bills “several months ago” to discuss a job as a team consultant. ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported that Bills owners Terry and Kim Pegula, as well as coach Rex Ryan, were present for the meeting, which took place in March or April. Nothing came of the discussions, and Coughlin currently works in the NFL’s football operations department.

According to Mortensen, Ryan and Coughlin simply mutually agreed that they were not a fit together and elected not to pursue a formal arrangement.

Recent rumors indicated that, with Ryan’s job under fire, Coughlin may have met privately with the Pegula family much more recently. These stories have been denied by all parties. However, if Coughlin made a good impression on the Pegulas during that meeting several months back and Ryan’s Bills continue struggling, perhaps he may yet be lingering in their minds.
