Tom Coughlin still wants to coach in NFL

Tom Couglin

Former New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin will turn 70 this summer, and he is hoping his age doesn’t deter NFL teams from giving him a job next year.

In a recent chat with Peter King of The MMQB, Coughlin said his “motor is starting to run again” and that adjusting to his new life has been a challenge.

“I’ve coached 47 years of my life,” Coughlin told King. “You take it away, and that’s not an easy thing to duplicate.”

While he understands his age could be a concern for teams, Coughlin is confident any interested party will see how passionate he is if they are willing to hear what he has to say.

“We’ll see. It’ll take two to tango,” he said. “The 70-year-old-man stuff will be a factor, and I’m sure they’ll know this would be a three- or four-year thing. They’ll have to know the guy. If I have an opportunity to speak to anyone [about a coaching job], they’ll see what I’d be able to do for them.”

While the Giants want people to believe Coughlin stepped down, the two-time Super Bowl winner has made it very clear that he was forced out. There were initially rumblings that Coughlin might remain with the Giants organization in some sort of front office role, but it doesn’t sound like there’s any chance of that happening.

Perhaps a year off will be good for Coughlin, even at his age. If you read this report about his interview with the Philadelphia Eagles, you’ll get the impression that he was not ready to move on from the job he spent 15 years at.
