Tony Romo not practicing this week, likely out through Week 8

Tony Romo Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys were initially hopeful that Tony Romo would be able to return from his back injury after the Week 7 bye, but as of now the veteran quarterback is expected to be out longer than that.

Jason Garrett told reporters on Monday that Romo will not take part in the team’s lone practice this week, and the Cowboys coach admitted that likely means Romo will not be ready for Week 8 against the Philadelphia Eagles.

“I would not anticipate that,” Garrett said, via Clarence Hill of the Star-Telegram. “We are going to have a short practice on Wednesday. Tomorrow is going to be a run and lift day for the guys. We haven’t talked about the players who aren’t going to be available.”

Garrett said he anticipates Romo ramping up his rehab over the next two weeks, though he was noncommittal on whether or not the 36-year-old was guaranteed the starting job when he returns.

“The biggest thing we try to do is we try to focus on the day,” he added. “Tony is doing a great job with his rehab. He’s worked very hard to come back like he has over the past couple years when he’s dealt with some of these injuries.

“In regard to Dak Prescott, his job is to prepare to play. He’s been playing quarterback for us for the first six ballgames, and he comes to work every day — prepare, prepare, prepare — then goes to the game on Sunday afternoons.”

Prescott led Dallas to its most impressive win of the season — a 30-16 win at Green Bay — on Sunday. More than one Cowboys legend feels that the team should stick with the rookie as long as he keeps winning. At the very least, Prescott’s steady play has allowed the Cowboys to not rush Romo back.
