Report: Tony Romo likely out 8-10 weeks

Tony Romo

The initial projections following the news of Tony Romo’s back injury suggested the Dallas Cowboys quarterback would be out 6-10 weeks. Apparently that six-week mark was a little optimistic.

The Dallas Morning News’ David Moore says 8-10 weeks is a more reasonable timetable for Romo’s back injury.

Moore explains why 8-10 weeks is more likely:

Romo will undergo another MRI this weekend, nine to 10 days after the initial injury. Those results will dictate whether the Cowboys carry him on the active roster or place him on injured reserve, meaning the earliest he could return would be Nov. 6 against Cleveland.

The Cowboys need to decide whether they will carry Romo on the active roster for the first part of the season while he is recovering. They have the option to place him on injured reserve with a designation to return, which allows a player to practice six weeks after being placed on IR and be activated after eight weeks

The interesting part is the timing of the team’s bye week. The Cowboys have a bye in Week 7, so Romo could be placed on IR and miss one fewer game thanks to the bye while still having time to recover. Knowing that Romo wouldn’t be able to play for a while, the Cowboys might want to place him on IR so they can have an extra roster spot available the first part of the season rather than dedicate it to him while he recovers.

The most recent words on Romo was that he would be able to start training again in 3-6 weeks. You can see video of the play where he was injured here.
