NFL broadcasting director: Missing out on Tony Romo cost Texans season opener

Tony Romo

The NFL schedule could have looked a little bit different had the Houston Texans gone the extra mile to go get Tony Romo.

NFL Senior Director of Broadcasting Mike North admitted on Friday morning’s edition of Good Morning Football on NFL Network that the Texans could have been featured on the NFL’s season-opening Kickoff game had they traded for or signed Romo.

“We were looking at our schedule, and thinking to ourselves, ‘What happens if tomorrow we all wake up and we read somebody’s Twitter feed and Romo’s the quarterback of the Texans? What, then, would we change in our approach to this schedule?'” North said, via Chris Wesseling of NFL.com. “The Houston at New England game, for instance. Right now it’s a 1:00 CBS game, probably going to be on in 25 percent of the country. If that were Romo-Brady, I’m not sure only 25 percent of the country should see that game. Heck, that game maybe could have been Kickoff if Tony signed early enough.”

North also said that there could have been shifts had Romo landed with the Denver Broncos.

“If Romo went to the Broncos, all of the sudden that (Week 2) Cowboys-Broncos game becomes a whole different animal,” North said.

Romo will instead be calling games, possibly ones involving his former team. It certainly has intrigue, but not as much as it would have offered had he been playing.
