Von Miller likely to get franchise tag from Broncos

Von Miller

If past history is an indication of future behavior, then we can expect the Denver Broncos to use their franchise tag on linebacker Von Miller while trying to work out a long-term extension with him.

Miller, the No. 2 overall draft pick in 2011, is set to become a free agent. The Broncos will undoubtedly try to sign him long term — GM John Elway has said as much — but they will likely place the franchise tag on him to ensure they have him for the 2016 season.

In three of the last four years the Broncos used the franchise tag on a player and then signed him to a long-term deal. As Jeff Legwold of ESPN points out, they did so with kicker Matt Prater in 2012; offensive tackle Ryan Clady in 2013; and they did so with wide receiver Demaryius Thomas last year.

Miller recorded 11 sacks last season, 14 the season before, and he produced a career-best 18.5 sacks as a second-year player in 2012. He rose to stardom in the postseason with five sacks, two forced fumbles and an interception, while being named Super Bowl MVP.

Another positive about Miller for potential teams is that he was cleared from the league’s substance abuse program after being placed in it following his 2013 positive test. That means he does not have to go through extra testing nor would he be facing punishment as a repeat offender if he does get caught again.

As well as he played last season and as valuable as he was during the Super Bowl run, the Broncos have to be expected to do everything possible to keep Miller.
