Washington giving out burgundy towels to counter Steelers’ Terrible Towels

Terrible Towel

Washington’s football team is taking some extra precautions ahead of Monday night’s season opener to ensure they don’t lose a homefield advantage from the fans.

Washington will host the Pittsburgh Steelers and doesn’t want a repeat of what happened in 2008. The last time the teams played at FedEx Field, Steelers fans were omnipresent and waving their yellow Terrible Towels.

This time around, Washington came up with a good plan to counteract.

According to The Washington Post, Washington will be giving out burgundy towels to fans attending the game. That way when fans of both teams wave the towels, it will provide a mix of burgundy and yellow, which forms Washington’s colors.

Giving away burgundy towels won’t help reduce the crowd noise if Steelers fans buy their way into the stadium as they did last time, which forced Washington to go to a silent snap count at home. But at least the towels will provide more of a visual illusion of there being a great amount of support for the home team.

It’s not a bad solution by Washington, but what really would have been great is if these towels were in burgundy.
