Aaron Baddeley sinks hole-in-one on par-4, counts as birdie

Aaron-Baddeley-hole-in-one

Aaron Baddeley became just the second golfer in PGA Tour history to register a hole-in-one on a par-4 yesterday while playing in the first round of the Valero Texas Open. Believe it or not, the incredible shot only counted as a birdie.

When Baddeley teed up his first shot at the 17th hole, he pulled it way left and it ended up out of bounds. He then decided to re-tee from the tee box and hit his third shot. The drive, which was his third shot for scoring purposes, went straight into the hole.

“I was thinking of gripping a 3-wood or hit a cut driver, and I don’t know, I went with the cut driver,” Baddeley said of his first shot, via Michael Collins of ESPN.com. “(Instead) I hit a pulled draw in the middle of the trees.

“I just said to myself, it was just the wrong shot. Hit a straight one. It was straight downwind, get it going straight, it will go straight. So I hit — and I hit the second one, man. Why didn’t I do that the first time? And it rolls up and goes in.”

We’ve seen plenty of impressive holes-in-one over the years, but Baddeley is the only PGA Tour player to hit a ball OB on a par-4 and then sink his next shot. Don’t be surprised if it never happens again.
