Tiger Woods backup putter from 2001 sells for $29,000
We have some terrible news for those of you who always dreamed of owning a Tiger Woods backup putter and had $30,000 burning a hole in your pocket — you may have missed your chance.
An eBay sale for a 2001 Scotty Cameron putter that was made as a reserve putter for Tiger ended on Monday, with some lucky collector shelling out $29,000 (plus $80 shipping from Tokyo) for the piece of hardware. The putter was apparently made by Scotty Cameron himself and was an exact copy of the one Woods used when he completed the “Tiger Slam” and won four straight majors in 2001.
As Golf Digest notes, the flat stick was originally sold through Green Jacket Auctions in April for just north of $23,000. A letter written and signed by Cameron confirmed its authenticity.
The astronomical price for a putter that was never actually used in competition reminds us of a time when Tiger was more than just some guy who can’t even impress your daughter. Times have certainly changed.
