Caroline Wozniacki: Rory McIlroy breakup was a ‘shock’

Caroline Wozniacki and Rory McIlroy did not have a mutual split. It was clearly the 25-year-old Northern Irishman’s decision, and Wozniacki’s public comments about the breakup have confirmed that. Earlier this week, Wozniacki lost to Yanina Wickmayer at the French Open in her first match since the engagement was called off. She described herself as being in a state of “shock.”

“You’re not prepared for something like this, and it came as a bit of a shock,” Wozniacki said, according to The Independent. “I just tried to prepare the best that I could, and really tried to focus on my match and on what I had to do out there.”

After learning some of the details of the breakup, it’s easy to understand why Wozniacki was stunned. McIlroy decided to end the relationship just says after the couple’s wedding invitations went out. He said the sending of the invitations made him realize he “wasn’t ready for all that marriage entails.” McIlroy then supposedly broke up up Wozniacki in a very brief phone conversation.

Now, Wozniacki is just looking to move forward.

“The only thing I really have to say is that to thank everybody for their support and sweet messages,” she said. “That’s really nice. What happens in my personal life, I just want to really keep that between my closest people around me. I just have to move on.”

McIlroy has already moved on by winning a tournament. Hopefully Wozniacki is able to do the same.
