Outdoor basketball courts collapse at high school in Huntington Park

High-school-courts-collapse

A rather large sinkhole — or not a sinkhole, depending on who you ask — has opened up in the middle of the outdoor basketball courts at a high school outside of Los Angeles.

Crews were working diligently Tuesday to repair the ground at Linda Esperanza Marquez High School in Huntington Park after it began collapsing. Los Angeles Unified School District facility executive Mark Hovatter said that unlike with a sinkhole, the cause of this particular issue is known.

As part of a construction project three years ago, a water collection basin was installed under the basketball courts. In January, officials noticed the ground cracking near the area over the water basin and fenced the area off.

“The most important thing to point out is this is not a sinkhole. A sinkhole implies that there’s some unknown factor and you don’t know how far it’s going to go,” Hovatter told KTLA 5. “We know exactly what this is, and how far it can go.”

Hovatter insists students were never in danger and that there is no risk of the courts collapsing beyond the current confines of the problem.

While it doesn’t sound like this was anything near as frightening as the sinkhole we saw at a college football stadium a couple years ago, it’s always alarming to see something like that.
