Capitals GM: Barry Trotz will be back if he wants to be

Barry Trotz

Fresh off winning their first Stanley Cup in franchise history, Washington Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan is putting to rest some of the uncertainty over head coach Barry Trotz’s future.

Following the Capitals’ 4-3 victory over the Las Vegas Golden Knights on Thursday to clinch the Cup, MacLellan addressed the situation of Trotz, whose contract is expiring this summer.

“He’s under contract until July 1,” said MacLellan, per Greg Wyshynski of ESPN. “He just won a Stanley Cup. If he wants to be back, he’ll be back.”

The 55-year-old Trotz has coached the Capitals for the last four seasons and spent the previous 15 seasons coaching the Nashville Predators. This is his first career Stanley Cup victory as well, leading to some speculation that he may decide to go out on top and retire. However, it sounds like the Capitals would like for Trotz to continue coaching them, so hopefully we can look forward to more of his wisecracks for years to come.
