Report: Islanders close to deal to play some home games at Coliseum

Nassau Coliseum Islanders

The New York Islanders are close to reaching a deal to play some future home games at Nassau Coliseum, according to a report.

Newsday’s Jim Baumbach reported on Tuesday that the Islanders are expected to play 12 games at the Coliseum next season if a deal is reached. If those 12 games go well, the Isles could play a mix of half their home games at Barclays Center in Brooklyn and the other half at Nassau Coliseum the season after that.

The Islanders played their home games at Nassau Coliseum from the team’s inception in 1972 until 2015. The arena re-opened last year after undergoing a renovation.

The Islanders have been playing their home games at Barclays Center, and their attendance is the lowest in the league this season at just over 12,000 fans per game.

The new planned home for the Islanders will be at Belmont Park. It’s not expected to be ready until the 2021-2022 season at the earliest.
