Slava Voynov taken in by US Immigration, could face deportation

Slava Voynov

Slava Voynov could be facing serious discipline and even deportation after he was taken into custody by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement Wednesday, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Voynov had been in jail since July 7 after pleading no contest to a misdemeanor domestic violence charge. He was taken from jail to a detention facility for US ICE, according to The Times. He is awaiting a hearing with an immigration judge, who can review his visa.

Voynov was arrested after beating up his wife. A police report states that Voynov hit his wife at a team party, and then proceeded to choke, kick and push her later at their home. She told police it was not the first time he had gotten physical with her.

Voynov signed a six-year, $25 million deal with the Los Angeles Kings two years ago, but he has been suspended without pay since his October arrest. Immigration judges generally take domestic violence issues very seriously, so Voynov’s future with the Kings and in the country is very much in question.
